3 Packers in the Pro Bowl
December 30th, 2009 | by adamburnett |Nick Collins, Aaron Rodgers, and Charles Woodson have been selected to the Pro Bowl. Woodson was selected as a starter for the NFC squad. I believe these three selections are legitimate. Ryan Grant statistically merits consideration, but the running back position is deep with worthy candidates. Donald Driver and Greg Jennings also fall short compared to their contemporaries for Pro Bowl consideration.
Collins received his second career Pro Bowl selection. The fifth-year pro has 51 tackles, 6 picks, a sack, and fumble recovery on the season. Collins is driving his price higher upon pending free agency. He becomes the first Packers’ safety to earn consecutive Pro Bowl selections since LeRoy Butler went to three straight (1996-98).
Rodgers earns his first career selection due to ranking among the leagues top 10 in most passing categories. On Sunday, he became the first player in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards in each of his first two seasons as a starter. I thought Dan Marino and Kurt Warner would have accomplished that feat. Marino threw for 2,210 yards in his first season, then 5,084 yards in his second year. Warner threw for 4,353 yards in his first season and 3,429 yards in his second campaign.
Woodson’s selection is his 2nd with the Pack and 6th overall. I believe he’s the defensive player of the year with a career high 81 tackles, 8 picks which ties a career high, 2 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 18 passes defensed. He is the top corner in the game today with Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis of the Jets a close second.
Outside linebacker Clay Matthews was named a first alternate. Left tackle Chad Clifton, running back Ryan Grant, and inside linebacker A.J. Hawk were also named alternates. I find the alternate selection of Clifton to be questionable. I don’t think he played at a Pro Bowl level this season.
