Crosby’s struggles continue
December 21st, 2009 | by adamburnett |Packers Kicker Mason Crosby has a big enough leg to nail 50 yarders and has been reliable making 79.5 % of his kicks in 2 years with the team. In the 2007 campaign, he missed 8 attempts in 16 games. The 2008 season saw Crosby miss 7 attempts in 16 games. While in 2009, through 14 games he’s missed 9 kicks. He’s made 24 of 33 on the year for 72.7%. The lonesome kicker has had a rough year with misses coming from 34, 42, 38, and 43 yards in the past four games. This week brought a change in holders from backup quarterback Matt Flynn to punter Jeremy Kapinos. What should the Packers do with the struggling kicker? Sunday’s miss was the first one to cost the Packers a game this season. Last week, they decided to stand by their man and not bring in other kickers for workouts.
I believe kickers are like relief pitchers in baseball and sometimes they go through bad cycles. The fact that he’s 6th in the NFL in points scored with 110 is a product of playing in a high scoring offense. At this point of the season would it be tough to find a reliable kicker off the street. The Cowboys just released Nick Folk and replaced him with Shaun Suisham. Folk was a pro bowl selection in 2007, but fell on hard times making 18 of 28 for a 64.3%. Suisham made 18 of 21 kicks for 85.7% this season before getting released by the Redskins after missing 3 kicks in a span of 3 games. This a business that comes down to what have you done for me lately. I’m not sure how many more kicks he’s allowed to miss before it costs him a job.
