Brohm signs with Bills

November 19th, 2009 | by adamburnett |

The Buffalo Bills have raided the Packers practice squad twice this season.  5th round pick Jamon Meredith was signed in September and has started 3 games at right tackle.  That spot has been a revolving door for the Pack this season.  Now the Bills have pulled away quarterback Brian Brohm form the Pack.  Green Bay offered the Brohm the same two year deal as the Bills, but he decided to go to Buffalo.  The Packers had the room to keep Brohm after having an open roster spot after waiving wide receiver Jake Allen earlier in the week.  Allen caught on with the Cleveland Browns.

Brohm is going from a team that has a franchise signal caller to a team that’s desperately looking to fill in that piece.  Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick haven’t proven to be a quarterback you want to build around.  With a new head coach coming in next season, Brohm may have a chance to prove what he can do.  It’s disappointing for the Packers in the fact that they wasted a second round pick on the guy and got absolutely nothing in return after two years.  Why they didn’t offer more money than the Bills is a question I would like answered.  Mike McCarthy’s head coaching merits have been questioned by some fans this season.  I do believe he’s a good teacher of how to play the quarterback position and Brohm’s failure to progress was alarming.  During his time in Green Bay Brohm showed practically nothing in any of the preseason games or practices to show he belongs.

A change of scenery may be just what he needs to turn his career around.  He’ll have a familiar face to work with in center Eric Wood.  The duo played together at the University of Louisville.  Brohm was the 56th pick of the 2008 NFL Draft and the next selection was quarterback Chad Henne by the Miami Dolphins.  It’s easy to second guess sitting in a recliner, but the Michigan product is now the starter for the Fins and is considered their franchise quarterback.  Some analysts had Henne graded higher than Brohm.  I always viewed the selection of Brohm as a potential trade chip.  If the Packers took Henne instead they’d have the trade chip.   This was a hotly contested pick for the Thompson haters and is another nail in their coffin for him.  I understand why Thompson took Brohm with that high of a selection; unfortunately it just didn’t work out.
