Using The Who describe the Packers 2009 campaign

The Green Bay Packers had a successful 2009 season. With the wild card round loss to the Cardinals some fans may look at the season as a half Empty Glass.  The 2009 campaign saw an Amazing Journey to a 10-6 record for a team that went 6-10 in 2008.  The coaching staff had the team Join Together as a group with Faith in Something Bigger than themselves.  McCarthy has made sure things are done My Way.  Aaron Rodgers made the Pro Bowl and felt more comfortable saying I’m the Face of the franchise.  Early in the season, teams were able to release the Dogs on Rodgers.  Therefore, the Packers had Rodgers Going Mobile to keep him away from the rush.  The league has taken notice of the Rodgers Success Story.  The Chicago Bears wanted to interview Green Bay Quarterbacks coach Tom Clements for their offensive coordinator opening.  Mike McCarthy wouldn’t let Tommy go to the Bears.

Winning the Offseason

There are many ways to run a keeper league.  Some don’t allow moves after the season, while others may allow moves up until the draft.  I play in both fantasy league formats.  With the ability to add to my roster until the NFL Draft,  I’ve tried to take full advantage.  I fell short of accomplishing my goal of winning the league championship.  I assessed where the problem areas were on the team and set the goal to win the offseason.  I grabbed anything and everything with value to use as trade bait.  We’ve made a few 2-for-1 deals to fix problem areas.  First David Garrard and Darren Sharper were sent out for Jay Cutler.  Then, we moved Chad Henne and Calais Campbell for Julius Peppers.  We found matches with the two teams to make moves.  One of the things that’s very rude is offering trades to people that make absolutely no sense.  You don’t want to come off as the guy that’s trying to screw everybody.  In a keeper league you get a reputation and that makes things much more difficult to operate.  I have one friend that continues to send out ding-dong trades in every league and nobody takes him seriously.  You may also come across people that you can’t find a match.  The deal seems fair to you, but they have other values.  One player actually told me he’d rather grab Ryan Fitzpatrick or Bruce Gradkowski for free, than pay a fair price for Matthew Stafford.  Good luck with that dynamic duo.  Another thing to do is put a note along with the trade offer.  Giving the other party an idea of what you’re thinking, makes things much easier.  The fantasy football season is never-ending.  Treat it as such and you may play in more league championship games.

Rodgers plays well in the Pro Bowl

The AFC beat the NFC 41-34 in South Florida.  I watched parts of the game because three Packers played in the contest.  There’s nothing the NFL could change to get me completely fired up to watch the Pro Bowl.  Aaron Rodgers started for the NFC squad completing 15/19 for 197 yards and 2 TD.  Rodgers hit Steve Smith of the Giants for a 48 yard score and DeSean Jackson for a 7 yard strike.  Nick Collins had 4 tackles and Clay Matthews had 1 tackle.  Many complaints have been made about this year’s Pro Bowl and how it should be fixed.  I wasn’t a fan of having players from the Super Bowl teams at the event.  They don’t need to be on the sidelines at an exhibition game.  Complaints were also made to on how the game was played.  It didn’t look like real football.  We’ll there’s no blitzing, no press coverage, no zones. What the heck do you expect?  Mario Williams held up on quarterbacks countless times in the game.  I don’t expect to see fundamentally sound play in an exhibition game.  So what if some of the stars don’t want to show up for the Pro Bowl.  There’s still good players playing in the game.  The Pro Bowl selection may not mean anything to some guys that have been there multiple times.  Rodgers, Collins, and Matthews looked like they enjoyed the Pro Bowl experience.  The Pro Bowl is an exhibition game and should be treated as such.

Warner did enough to merit a bust in Canton

In 1994, Kurt Warner failed to make the Green Bay Packers as Brett Favre, Ty Detmer, and Mark Brunell were kept on the roster.  We all know the rest of the story.  Warner isn’t the only elite QB to come from humble beginnings. Johnny Unitas was released by the Steelers before success with the Colts.  Len Dawson was cut by the Steelers and Browns, before having success with the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs.

Favre cost Vikings a trip to the Super Bowl?

My goal in writing for this site or baseballbrew.com, and bucksden.com is to provide thought provoking analysis on the teams we follow.  I found the “are you rooting for or against Brett Favre” topic didn’t fall under that category.  I’m not a supporter of Brett Favre for his actions with the Packers, but I feel that his performance in the NFC Championship game must be addressed.  I’m pumped the Vikings lost to the Saints 31-28 and Favre won’t go to the Super Bowl wearing purple.  His late interception is viewed by some as a complete bonehead play.  Why he just didn’t run for 10 yards on the bootleg, instead of throwing against his body will go down in Vikings history.  It won’t overtake Jim Marshall running the wrong way, but could rival Gary Anderson’s late shank in the 1998 NFC Championship game.  Anderson went 35-35 on the regular season and missed a kick late in a 30-27 OT loss to the Falcons.

1985 LA Rams music video

Here’s a 1985 music video by the Los Angeles Rams.  Check out #21 Nolan Cromwell.  He was a 4-time Pro Bowl selection with the Rams playing from 1977-1987.  Cromwell served as a Green Bay assistant coach under Mike Holmgren from 1992-1998.  He worked as the special t eams coach from 1992-1997 and as the wide receivers coach in 1998.  Also, Eric Dickerson shows he’s a lyrical genius.

Schneider heads to Seattle

Packers Director of Football Operations John Schneider has signed on to be the General Manager of the Seattle Seahawks.  The 17 year NFL front office executive previously worked for the Seahawks under Mike Holmgren and Ted Thompson as the director of player personnel in 2000.  The De Pere native will work in collaboration with new coach Pete Carroll according to the Seahawks website.  His career began as an intern under Ron Wolf in 1992.  He worked for the Packers as a pro personnel assistant from 1993-1996, then jumped to the Chiefs as a director of pro personnel from 1997-1999.  After a year with the Seahawks, he worked in 2001 as the VP of player personnel with the Redskins.   After spending 6 years as the Packs top personnel assistant, he was promoted in 2008 to director of football operations.  Schneider’s career path has steadily gone upward and it was a matter of time before he got chance to run a team.  If Schneider pulls away other Green Bay executives or scouts is something to watch for in the coming weeks.

Gaines Adams dead at age 26

Gaines Adams passing from cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart at the age of 26 is shocking news.  The 4th overall pick in the 2007 draft was traded from the Bucs to the Bears for a 2010 2nd round pick during this past season.  The Bears had planned on letting Adewale Ogunleye leave via free agency and have Adams step into his place.  With defensive line coach Rod Marinelli’s tutelage the Bears hoped to have a dominant defensive end for the near future.  Despite not playing for most of the season, I held onto him in my keeper league with the thought Adams may become an impact player in 2010.  Some people won’t draft or sign players from the teams they hate.  I don’t care what team a guy plays for, I care about winning the league championship.

Capers named coordinator of the year

Dom Capers has been named the coordinator of the year by Sporting News.  The vote was conducted by 53 current NFL head coaches and league executives.  Capers (14 votes) edged Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer (13) for the honor. New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams (nine) was third in the voting. In 1999, Capers was named NFL Assistant Coach of the Year by Pro Football Weekly/PFW and USA Today, his first season as defensive coordinator with Jacksonville. He also won every major Coach of the Year award for the Carolina Panthers in 1996.

Woodson wins Defensive Player of the Year

This has been an amazing journey for Charles Woodson and the Green Bay Packers.  They were the only team to offer a contract when he was a free agent in 2006.  The stink of the Raiders ruined his reputation.  The same thing happened to Randy Moss.  Charles Woodson has been worth every cent of that contract.  Woodson had one of the best seasons for a defensive player that I’ve ever seen and wins the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year.  Woodson received 28 votes as Jets corner Darrelle Revis finished 2nd with 14.  Broncos linebacker Elvis Dumervil and Saints safety Darren Sharper tied for third with 3 votes.  Vikings end Jared Allen received 2 votes.  His stats in 2009 are ridiculous for a cornerback finishing with a career-high 81 tackles, 21 passed defensed, 4 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery.  Quarterbacks didn’t stay away from Woodson enough, as he finished tied for the league lead with 9 interceptions and 3 returned to the house. He became the fourth player in league history to record at least nine interceptions and two sacks in a season.
